When I make something, I try to go for something clearly above my skill level. That's the only way I know how to make something. All my life, I just do way more than should be possible, and that's how I learn.
So one day I was reading Hamlet and thought, "Hey. Ophelia's pretty cool and kind of crazy. That'd make a good costume." and then ambitious Taimi said, "Hey. You should make that a corset. and it should have strips of fabric going everywhere and cool lining and should lace up all fancy-like." and so I decided to do that.

In the initial process, I kind of had a basic idea of what I wanted it to look like. I knew I wanted black, because of the nature of Ophelia's character. She’s rather dark and oppressive feeling, and I thought the best way to represent that would be in black. I knew that I wanted a floral element because I was inspired by the scene where she gives flowers to the members of the royal court, I think it is important to show the underlying layers of her character. I also wanted to have some sort of embellishments to show a slight complexity. This list kept getting longer. Then Ambitious Taimi said “Hey. You know what would be cool. Strips of fabric going everywhere to show the restrictiveness of her environment.” and regular Taimi agreed. I planned on doing multiple strips of fabric for the neck area of the corset to give a kind of caged feeling. To tone down the bottom I decided upon a black pencil skirt, its simple, yet modern looking to match the top and few skirts are more restrictive than a pencil skirt.

To be honest, I had no idea how to make a corset. I’ve never made anything more difficult than an apron or a pair of pajama pants. (Which were actually disasters. Don’t ask me about those.)
But I going to try any way because, well, you can just reference my first sentence. I hope that I will be able to work this out, but you know what Shakespeare says, “Better to have sewn and make an amazingly glorious wreck, than to have not sewn at all.” (Okay. That’s not the exact quote. I was paraphrasing.)
